PROTECT NATURE – CREATE CHANGE: PRESERVING GERMANY’S PEATLANDS & PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

PROTECT NATURE – CREATE CHANGE: PRESERVING GERMANY’S PEATLANDS & PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Nature is close to our hearts. It’s a valuable resource we must actively protect. In our first blog post on the topic Peatland conservation initiative at camel active, we highlighted the crucial role peatlands play in climate regulation and biodiversity.

Now, camel active has taken action once again and teamed up with the Naturschutzstiftung Emsland to carry out our second peatland conservation initiative. With full commitment, we helped preserve the habitat of rare plant and animal species.

WHY IS PROTECTING PEATLANDS SO IMPORTANT?

Peatlands are true climate heroes: they store vast amounts of CO₂ and help regulate the water balance. Yet despite their importance, they are among the most threatened ecosystems worldwide. Drainage and intensive land use are causing many peatlands to lose their natural functions. Targeted conservation efforts are urgently needed – and that’s exactly where camel active´s initiative comes in.

If you’d like to learn more about the vital role peatlands play in protecting the environment, check out our first blog post on this topic.

camel active TAKES ACTION –
OUR PEATLAND PROJECT
IN “KLEINES WITTEFEHN”

As part of our sustainability mission “make an active change”, we at camel active launched another peatland protection initiative. Together with many dedicated colleagues, we helped care for the protected natural site “Kleines Wittefehn” in the municipality of Langen. Our aim: to make a meaningful contribution to peatland conservation in Germany and support the preservation of these valuable ecosystems. With support from Naturschutzstiftung Emsland, we removed previously cut reed to promote the natural regeneration of the peatland.

Hands-on for nature – preserving peatlands & protecting the environment

Equipped with rakes and wheelbarrows, we cleared vegetation from the dikes and removed it from the site. These maintenance measures are essential to prevent the area from becoming overgrown and to protect rare plant species such as bell heather and marsh gentian. “Kleines Wittefehn” is the last remaining site in the Emsland region where these rare species still grow.

But it’s not just plants that benefit from our efforts. Peatlands in Germany also provide vital habitats for endangered animals such as the Eurasian bittern, marsh harrier, wild bees, rare butterflies, and moor frogs. By maintaining this environment, we create better conditions for these species and actively contribute to environmental protection.

Voices from the conservation team

Maike Hoberg from the Emsland Nature Conservation Foundation joined us that day and praised the initiative:

“Working with the camel active team was a real pleasure. Everyone was incredibly motivated and kept up the good mood, even in the typical rainy, windy Northern German winter weather. [...] This was a big help for nature – now, rare animals and plants can get the light and space they need to grow and thrive again.”

SUSTAINABLE ACTION WITH “MAKE AN ACTIVE CHANGE”

With our “make an active change” initiative, we’re committed to protecting nature in the long term. This peatland project shows that we don’t just talk about sustainability – we act on it. Protecting peatlands in Germany means protecting our climate and our environment. That’s why we’re proud to contribute to the preservation of these unique ecosystems.
Together, let’s make an active change!
